GIS and geospatial analysis have a critical role in undertaking planning research as the nature of urban planning issues and practices are predominantly spatial. In this talk, Aslı Göçmen will discuss ways that she has used geospatial analysis in undertaking several research projects, including analyzing conservation practices in residential subdivisions; identifying opportunities for wildlife habitat connectivity; examining forest fragmentation; and linking smart growth codes to residential development patterns.
Göçmen is an associate professor in the Department of Geography and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she has also taught in the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture. Prior to joining academia, she practiced as a planner and GIS specialist with Hamilton County, Ohio.
Part of the Spring 2026 GIS Seminar Series hosted by the Department of Urban Planning and Development, this seminar is open to all Iowa State students, faculty, and staff.
