Graduate Faculty Orientation Sessions

The Graduate College will hold two graduate faculty orientation sessions for newly appointed tenure/tenure-track and associate graduate faculty this month. After attending orientation, faculty can be added as instructors on graduate-level courses and serve on Academic Plan Committees. New T/TT faculty must attend one of these sessions before they are eligible to serve on Academic Plan Committees. All new associate graduate faculty are recommended to attend as well. The sessions will be from 9:30–11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, in 2105 Pearson, and 2–3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, in 1204 Kildee. Both sessions will be identical, so sign up for only one.

Foreign Travel Grant and Big 12 Faculty Fellowship proposals for the travel or fellowship period of March 1–Oct. 31, 2026, are due from departments via email to Amy Bannister by 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23. Digital Scholarship Symposium Proposals

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to submit proposals for the third annual Digital Scholarship Symposium from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, in The Catalyst digital research and learning space at Parks Library. Participants will explore how digital methods and tools enrich research, teaching, creative practice and public engagement, with particular attention to public digital arts and humanities and digital pedagogy. Proposals for either panel presentations or lightning talks are welcome, and they may feature completed projects, works in progress, teaching practices or exploratory ideas. Submit proposals via the online form through 11:59 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2; submitters will be notified of accepted proposals by Monday, Feb. 9.

Emergency and Safety Information

In case of an emergency on the Iowa State University campus, follow posted evacuation procedures and contact campus security or emergency services immediately. In case of an emergency on campus, dial 911 or refer to Iowa State Health and Safety Resources.

  • Environmental crisis

    Fire:

In case of a fire alarm in the building, all faculty and staff are expected to leave their offices and evacuate classrooms and studios. Please proceed to the main level using the staircases (not the elevators). Staff will be positioned at the stairways to direct you and your students to a safe place.

    Tornado:

If the tornado sirens sound on campus, all faculty and staff are expected to leave their offices and evacuate classrooms and studios. Please proceed to the ground floor of the building. Follow the signs directing you to the designated tornado shelter area.

  • Student crisis

Make sure that you are familiar with the policies and procedures outlined on the Dean of Students Office website.

In the event of a crisis requiring emergency response, please call 911 or contact the Iowa State Police Department at 515-294-4428. When an emergency occurs, the Dean of Students Office will typically be notified. If a critical campus-wide situation occurs, the ISU Alert emergency notification system may also be activated. For further information on understanding students in distress, visit the Office of Student Assistance.

  • Other emergencies

If there is an emergency on campus that requires a building evacuation or lockdown, please check the college or Iowa State websites first for additional information. Depending on the situation it may be necessary to evacuate the building or barricade yourself and your students in a studio or classroom. The administration and the ISU Alert system will help keep you informed. Each teaching studio has a first aid kit. There are also first aid supplies in the King Pavilion restrooms. Contact Melissa Barnes, mbarnes1@iastate.edu, if the kits need to be replenished.

ISU Alerts

The ISU Alert system quickly notifies Iowa State University students, faculty and staff of potentially dangerous situations.

ISU Alert complements other forms of emergency notification, including warning sirens, public address announcements, the university homepage, personal communication and signage.

Iowa State University provides the ISU Alert service at no charge. Users who opt-in for text messages or calls to a cell phone may incur a fee, depending on their wireless provider.
