IDRO Seminar/Monday Chat: Fleshed Out: The Use of Dry Lacquer in East Asian Buddhist Sculptures

Time

Monday, April 20, 2026 to Monday, April 20, 2026 from 12:10pm to 1:00pm

Location
130 College of Design 715 Bissell Rd Ames IA 50011-1066

This presentation by Isabel McWilliams, assistant professor of art and visual culture, will consider the materiality of dry lacquer in Buddhist sculpture. Expensive, laborious, and unforgiving, this material and technique was used to render particularly human-like images that speak to an unfolding quest for human familiarity in the creation of divine bodies.

Hosted by the Institute for Design Research and Outreach, this seminar is part of the College of Design Monday Chat series highlighting the work of new assistant professors in the college. All are welcome.
