Promotion & Tenure Committee Trainings

Gary Taylor, the College of Design's faculty success advisor, will lead three Promotion and Tenure Committee training sessions this month. Departmental promotion and tenure committee members are required to attend one of these sessions, which are scheduled at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in 411 Design; 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in 116 Design; and noon Friday, Sept. 13, in 411 Design. A separate training session for Faculty Development Council members will be scheduled at a later date.

Prior to the in-person training, all participants must complete an online training in Workday Learn. More information can be found in the emails Taylor sent to faculty last week.

Student Employment Opportunities Move to CyHire

Student employment opportunities, including post-graduation positions, have moved from the AccessPlus job board to CyHire -– making it more convenient for students to seek employment. To access CyHire, faculty and staff need to request an account for the platform. An account gives faculty and staff access to listings for student jobs, internships and post-graduation roles, plus career fairs, information sessions and workshops important to student career development. More information can be found on the Student Employment Center website.

Cost-Sharing Program for Research Tools

The Cost-Sharing Program for Research Tools provides faculty with cost-sharing funds to purchase new equipment, replace or add new components to existing research instruments, or add new components to existing research instruments. All faculty are eligible and proposals are due to the office of vice president for research by Sunday, Sept. 15.

Reminder: Kevin Kane Retirement Reception

Help send off our colleague Kevin Kane, director of the Geographic Information Systems Support and Research Facility and former associate dean for research and outreach in the College of Design, as he concludes his 27-year career at Iowa State. His retirement reception will be from 2–4 p.m. today, Sept. 3, in 206 Durham. Read more

Reminder: Ingrid Lilligren & Debra Marquart Gallery Talk & Reading

Don't miss the gallery talk by Ingrid Lilligren, University Professor of Art and Visual Culture, from 4–5 p.m. this Wednesday, Sept. 4, in conjunction with her "Tactile Meditations" solo exhibition at the Grinnell College Museum of Art. She'll talk about the history of her work, which explores her incorporation of Braille to explore social, cultural and political blindness, and she'll share her inspiration and the making process for selected pieces in the show.

Lilligren will be joined by Debra Marquart, Distinguished Professor of English and outgoing Poet Laureate of Iowa, who will read poems included in Lilligren’s works. The exhibition runs through Sept. 8.

Reminder: New Internal College Website

College of Design faculty and staff now have access to an internal site called “Inside the College of Design” that aims to gather all the academic and administrative resources, policies, forms, sign-ons, quick links, emergency and safety information, and so on, in one place.

To access the dashboard, go to the main site, click on “Info and Resources” on the far right of the menu at the top of the homepage, then on “Faculty and Staff” in the drop-down menu. This will take you to the Inside the College of Design site. If you frequently need to find resources on this internal site, we recommend that you bookmark it or even make it your default homepage. We are continuing to add and update links and resources here; please let us know what else may be helpful to include.

News

Bridging the Divide Grant

Over the summer, Raluca Iancu, assistant professor of art and visual culture, and Rachel Eike, associate professor of fashion design and merchandising, were announced as recipients of Iowa State's 2024 Bridging the Divide grant for their project "Innovative Sustainable Solutions: Non-woven Textile Through Papermaking." Their project aims to merge sustainability practices with traditional fine art papermaking techniques.

Research Collaboration Catalysts Cohort

Merate Barakat, associate professor of architecture; Jiwnath Ghimire, assistant professor of community and regional planning; and Patrick Finley, assistant professor of graphic design, have been selected to participate in the Office of the Vice President for Research's 2024-2025 Research Collaboration Catalysts program cohort. They are among 20 Iowa State faculty selected for the program, which is designed to train the next generation of interdisciplinary research team leaders.

Recognitions

Firat Erdim

Associate professor of architecture Firat Erdim will have his instruments and music included in the "Unbuildings: Remnants, Devicings, Chancings, Hollowings, Leavings" exhibition at the Versus Art Project in Beyoğlu, İstanbul. The exhibition will feature 14 other international artists-architects and will be on view from Sept. 5 through Sept. 29. A symposium will be held on Sept. 6.

Evan Hume

Art and visual culture assistant professor Evan Hume's essay on "Denied Areas: Photographic Intelligence and the U.S. National Security State" was published in Archivo Photofile.

His monograph, "Viewing Distance," was also acquired by the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, and the Bibliotheca Hertziana Max Planck Institute for Art History in Italy.

Julie Irish

Julie Irish, associate professor of interior design, has been selected to be a mentor in the 2024-2025 cohort of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Partners Program. In the role, she will support junior faculty mentees, help foster community and connection across campus and further the pursuit of excellence in learning and teaching at ISU.

Miriam Martincic

Miriam Martincic, assistant teaching professor of graphic design, created the cover illustration for The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal. The September issue features a study on Lyme disease.

Jane Rongerude

Last week, associate professor of community and regional planning Jane Rongerude spoke at the European Network of Housing Researchers Conference on Making Housing Systems Work: Evidence and Solutions in Delft, The Netherlands. She presented her paper on "Understanding the Behaviors of Non-Institutional Long-Term Property Owners" during the "Private Rental Markets" workshop.

Christopher Scott

Christopher Scott, assistant teaching professor of graphic design, had two of his posters selected for the 16 Global Biennale of Graphic Design Golden Bee. More than 20,000 entries were submitted from 55 different countries.

Additionally, Scott's poster "Hashtag Peace" will be included in the Deutsche National Bibliothek poster collection at the German National Library in Leipzig, Germany.

Kimberly Zarecor

Kimberly Zarecor, professor of architecture, has accepted a position as a program director at the National Science Foundation. She will fulfill her roles at ISU and the NSF concurrently.

Li Zhang

"The Pursuit of Happiness," a silk painting by Li Zhang, assistant teaching professor of art and visual culture, was selected for the ViewPoint 56 National Juried Art Exhibition in Cincinnati, Ohio. The exhibition is organized by the Cincinnati Art Club, which was formed in 1890 and is the second oldest, continuously operating Art Club in the nation. Her artwork will be on view through Sept. 14.
